The majority of Americans are said to utilize YouTube as well as Facebook as well as TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok is most common among people younger than 30.
Despite a plethora of scandals and the public’s generally negative feelings about some social media, around seven-in-ten Americans believe they never utilize any social media platform and this percentage has remained fairly stable in the last five years, as per an upcoming Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults.
Beyond the issue of social media’s overall usage, the survey examines the use of specific sites as well as apps. YouTube and Facebook remain dominant in the internet landscape with 81 percent and 69% respectively, saying they have ever used these platforms. In addition, YouTube as well as Reddit have been the sole two sites which saw significant statistical growth in the year prior to 2019 when the Center conducted its last poll on the issue via a telephone survey.
Concerning the other platforms that are surveyed 40% of people admit to using Instagram and three out of ten report making use of Pinterest as well as LinkedIn. One quarter of respondents use Snapchat as well, and similar percentages say they use Twitter as well as WhatsApp. TikTok is an application for posting short videos utilized by 21 percent of Americans and 13% of them are using the community-oriented platform Nextdoor.
Although other platforms do not quite match the popularity that of YouTube or Facebook however, there are some applications or sites, most particularly Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok which have a particularly large following among younger adults. In actual fact, a majority of 18 to 29-year-olds use Instagram (71 percent) as well as Snapchat (65 percent) and roughly half use TikTok.
These results are based on an nationwide representative study from 1.502 U.S. adults conducted via telephone from Jan. 25-Feb.8 2021.
Except for YouTube and Reddit the majority of platforms show little growth in the year 2019.
YouTube is by far the most frequently utilized online platform that is questioned in this poll There’s evidence to suggest that its popularity is increasing. Eighty percent of Americans have said they’ve used the site for sharing videos, up from 73% in the year prior. Reddit is the sole platform that was surveyed to show significant statistical growth during this timeframe – rising from 11 percent in 2019 to 18 percent in the present.
The growth of Facebook has slowed in the past five years, however it’s still one of the most popular social media platforms among people across the United States: 69% of Americans today say they’ve used Facebook at least once which is the same percentage that had said the same two years ago.
The respective percentages of Americans who are using Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitter and WhatsApp remain unchanged in the year. This is part of a larger trend that extends over the last two years, in which the rapid growth of many of these websites and apps in the last decade has been slowed. (This is the very first time the Center was questioned about TikTok by phone and was the first time they have conducted a survey on Nextdoor.)
Adults who are younger than 30 are noted by their usage on Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok
If they are asked about their social media usage generally – and not only their specific use 72 percent of Americans admit that they have used social media websites.
In a manner that is consistent with previous Center research on the use of social media There are some striking age-related differences. About 84% of those between the ages of 18 and 29 claim they never use social media websites this is in line with the percentage of people between 30 and 49 that claim that (81 percent). In contrast, a lower percentage of people 50-64 (73 percent) claim to utilize social media however, fewer than half of people 65 and over (45 percent) say they do this.
The age disparities generally extend to particular platforms and platforms, with young Americans having a higher likelihood than elder counterparts to access these sites but the gap between older and younger Americans differ between platforms.
The majority of 18- to 29-year-olds use Instagram as well as Snapchat and around half of them of them are using TikTok With those on the younger side of this group – between the ages of 18 and 24 – more likely to use Instagram (76 percent), Snapchat (75%) or TikTok (55 percent). These numbers are against those of older age groups. For example that while the majority of adults aged between 18 and 29 claim to utilize Snapchat but only 2 percent of people aged older than 65 use Snapchat – a gap of 63 percent.
Furthermore, a large majority of those who are younger than 65 claim to utilize YouTube. More than 95% of people aged 18-29 say they are on YouTube and 91% of those aged 30 to 49, and 83% of adults aged 50 to 64. However, the percentage drops significantly – down up to 49% people aged 65 and over.
The gap in age between the youngest and older Americans are less pronounced on Facebook. More than 70% of people aged 18-29 admit to using the site and that share is identical for people aged 30 to 49 (77 percent) or 50 to 64 (73 percent). A majority of people 65 or older claim to utilize the website, which makes Facebook as well as YouTube among the top two popular platforms for older people.

Seven out of ten Facebook users claim to use the site every day, including 49% of users who frequently use the site every day. (These statistics are not statistically different from the figures from the Center’s 2018 survey on social media usage.)
